Zhonghui Guo, a researcher at Shanghai Blood Center (SBC), received professional training at the JRCS (Japanese Red Cross Society) Kinki Block Blood Center (Kinki BBC) from September 5th to November 30th 2016 in Osaka, Japan. Guo received instruction in the blood testing department, mainly focusing on mouse and human monoclonal antibody production and serological and molecular technology in Immunohematology. She also observed the whole work flow of blood donation and the blood products processing.
Kinki BBC has had great success setting up a virtuous cycle in blood samples examinations for donors and patients, rare blood screening and storage, research development and production of monoclonal antibody reagents, and also the process of highly automated preparation of blood products. Guo said the training was a fruitful learning experience for her and will have an important impact on her future work.
Coincidentally, while Guo was in Osaka, SBC and JRCS engaged in a collaboration to help a myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) patient in Osaka who urgently needed the rare type O, p phenotype blood. When the JRCS asked for help from all over the world through ISBT Rare Blood Registry. SBC responded at once and posted "help wanted" signs across China, successfully recruited 2 donors in a short time. After the collection, processing and successful testing,SBC provided 4 units of the rare blood to the Japanese patient in December 2016.
