Academic Exchange and Cooperation between SBC and Bloodworks

Since March 2017, Dr. Xie Dong Fu, a physician of Clinical Transfusion Consultation Services of Shanghai Blood Center (SBC), has been undergoing a training program as a visiting scholar at Bloodworks. Bloodworks is an outstanding institute on blood services and transfusion medicine research. The duration of the program is six months.

Headquartered in Seattle, Bloodworks (formerly Puget Sound Blood Center) is one of the nation’s largest blood centers and is one of only four that supports an NIH-funded research institute.

Bloodworks is affiliated with the University of Washington (UW), and most of their physicians and scientists hold appointments in either Hematology or Laboratory Medicine at UW. Together with other clinical pathology fellows from UW, Dr. Xie is receiving formal fellowship training in transfusion medicine, laboratory medicine and hematology.

During his first month in the program, Dr. Xie observed blood center operation processes and blood banking quality management, including blood collecting, processing, testing, inventory management, distributing, internal audit, management review and quality assurance. Dr. Xie also observed the Bloodworks public cord blood bank which collaborates with the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP).

Dr. Xie also got the opportunity to be directly involved in the work of Central Transfusion Services, a special model of Bloodworks, to learn clinical transfusion decision making, consultation services for clinicians, management of transfusion reaction, and transfusion medicine research.

Besides, Dr. Xie participated in Hemovigiliance work, to review the reports of transfusion reactions and complications related to blood donation.

Through excellent communication with the personnel of each section, Dr. Xie acquired a thorough understanding of the advanced system of blood services in the US.

Bloodworks organized a warm welcome for Dr. Xie and kindly accommodated him in any departments he scheduled to visit. News of his visit was announced on the Bloodworks newsletter, and he was invited to give a serial speech on Chinese Culture Diversity and Blood Banking in China.

Bloodworks has a long and distinguished reputation for providing education to blood banking specialists from around the world for many years. The experience of Dr. Xie’s visit will deepen the connections between Bloodworks and SBC to the betterment of both institutions.
