Shanghai Blood Center (SBC) Is Granted a Cooperation Project of Hong Kong Ocean Park Conservation Fu



Immunohaematology Red Blood Cell Lab applied for the project named ‘Basic research on panda blood transfusion’ as cooperative unit, and gained full support by OPCFHK from July 2016 to June 2018, which is international fund aimed to protect the world’s endangered animals and marine ecosystems. 

Pandas are world’s endangered and Chinese endemic animal species, prone to anemia for its living habits; meanwhile, they need blood transfusion in field rescue or operation. 


The project aims to solve basic problems of giant panda blood transfusion, study on the cryopreservation of red blood cells of giant panda, frozen storage and the red blood cells membrane protein, and solve the problem of red blood cell maintenance and transfusion for providing theoretical basis and guarantee for reasonable, safe and effective treatment of giant panda blood transfusion. 

This project was applied by China Giant Panda Protection Research Center and SBC in scientific research cooperation, presided by Pro. Li Desheng, deputy director of Wolong National Nature Reserve Administration, deputy director of China Giant Panda Research Center, and Zhu Ziyan, deputy director of Institute of Blood Transfusion of SBC, director of Immunohaematology Red Blood Cell Lab. Li Qin, Yi Luyi, Zhang Jiamin and Zhao Fengyong from the lab are the main experimental participants. 

Since its establishment in 2005, OPCFHK has funded more than 400 research projects, with a total amount of over HK $ 58 million. To protect animals and environment in Asia, especially the giant panda and Chinese White Dolphin, it has made outstanding contributions. 

Immunohaematology Red Blood Cell Lab of SBC, is a research group that study on the red cell antigen and corresponding antibody and the immune mechanism, its predecessor was the first “Blood Group Reference Lab” in China founded by the former Ministry of Health in 1985. The Lab established the first rare blood group of China, has undertaken a number of national health special fund, the national natural foundation of China, Shanghai natural fund, and has published multiple papers in the high level of the industry. 

Cooperation unit, the China Giant Panda Protection Research Center was established in 1983, is the largest and most comprehensive strength giant panda research institutions in the world., which has more than 170 giant pandas, accounting for 60% of the captive pandas, also is the most important output base of the giant panda cooperation research.
